Isabel Rodríguez Peña

Isabel Rodríguez Peña earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) and subsequently completed postdoctoral fellowships at Freie Universität Berlin and El Colegio de México. Since 2015, she is Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Since 2022 she is a member of the National System of Researchers (SNI). Her research focuses on the political economy of energy and extractivism in Latin America.

Radicalism and Political Radicalization in Latin America: Democratic Challenges, Differences, and Transformation

The Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS) is offering up to five research fellowships to be carried out at one of CALAS’s regional offices in Latin America (Guadalajara, Mexico; San José, Costa Rica; Quito, Ecuador; Buenos Aires, Argentina). The fellowships are part of the Knowledge Laboratory “Political Radicalism and Radicalization in Latin America: Democratic Challenges, Differences, and Transformation.” The residencies will last between three and five months, to be carried out between February and June 2027.

Battles over the Horizon of Meaning: Power and Cultural Hegemony in the face of Authoritarian Tendencies in Latin America and the Caribbean

The new phase of knowledge production at the CALAS moves from the diagnosis of the polycrisis toward the construction of horizons of meaning with transformative potential in the face of the obstacles confronting emancipatory practices. This process requires a transdisciplinary approach that allows for the analysis of power struggles in their multiple dimensions: the material basis of production, the relationship between the human and the non-human, political power, and the cultural hegemony that defines values, ideas, and ideological or religious orientations regarding gender.
