Cold War and coups d'état in Latin America (70 years after the coup d'état in Bolivia 1952)

Cold War and coups d'état in Latin America (70 years after the coup d'état in Bolivia 1952)

The Platform for Dialogue "Cold War and coups d'état in Latin America (70 years after the coup d'état in Bolivia 1952)" will offer a space to present and discuss individual experiences, academic analyses, political positions, literary and artistic representations of the discussion on coups d'état in Latin America during the period 1947-1990. We are interested in their applications, their collateral effects, the economic and social thinking that motivated them, as well as their impacts and their effects on the present. The objective is also to contribute to a history of the concept of "coup d'état", its uses and abuses and its interrelations with political, social and military history.

The Platform for Dialogue will be held on November 8th and 9th, 2022 at the Center for Historical Research of Central America (CIHAC) at the University of Costa Rica. Access is free of charge.

Non-colonial theoretical-methodological approaches in sociocultural health research

Non-colonial theoretical-methodological approaches in sociocultural health research

The Covid-19 pandemic brought to light multiple realities in the health/disease/care/prevention processes. Most of the health systems in diverse countries of the world were overwhelmed in the search to provide care to the large number of people infected by SARS-COV-2. Processes of historical and structural economic inequality that had a direct impact on health care were aggravated by the pandemic. Hospital reconversion forced health systems to focus solely on COVID-19 care, suspending care for acute and chronic pre-existing diseases, generating greater vulnerability and interrupting processes of adherence to treatment for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, HIV, cardiovascular diseases, mental illnesses, etc.

It is necessary to analyze and reflect on non-colonial theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of health and consider different voices of diverse actors involved in the research process. It is also necessary to consider the statements of the users of health services and of the people involved in health care. It is also essential to show that there are multiple visions besides the one imposed by biomedicine to deal with the processes of health/illness/care-prevention. We jointly seek to establish knowledge constructions hand in hand with all the actors involved in the problems we investigate.

The doctor-patient relationship should be horizontal and listening based, taking into account the biopsychosocial dimensions of the health/illness/care-prevention process to generate better diagnoses, treatment options that comply with adherence and effective prevention strategies. Without the imposition of an exclusively biomedical vision; what do users of medical services know about their illnesses, what do they do to cure them and what individual and collective dimensions are involved in these processes.

This seminar aims to establish processes of dialogue and reflection on the processes of health/illness/care-prevention of various health problems, from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, considering categories such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, etc.

The seminar will be held from November 7th to 9th, 2022 at the University of Guadalajara. Due to space capacity, attendee capacity is limited.

Cambio social y transiciones en América Latina. Abordajes interdisciplinarios

Cambio social y transiciones en América Latina. Abordajes interdisciplinarios

The following two new publications from the "Afrontar las crisis desde América Latina" collection will be presented at the Guadalajara International Book Fair:

1) Gerardo Gutiérrez Cham: Narrativas de exesclavizados afroamericanos. Conflictos de autoría, CALAS/Editorial Universidad de Guadalajara, November 2022.

Presenter: Patricia Córdova Abundis

Abstract: The central topic of this essay is the conflict unleashed by the authorship of autobiographies written by enslaved people of African descent during the 18th and 19th centuries in the Americas. The book deals with the cases of four authors whose testimonial narratives have been widely disseminated since they were published: Olaudah Equiano, Mary Prince, Juan Francisco Manzano and Mahomma Gardo Baquaqua. The book analyzes the fact that, for centuries, the use of the "I", as the author's referential voice, was a privileged entity, elaborated  by the protagonists themselves through printed accounts. It was also taken for granted that the rest of lives only deserved to remain confined to strictly private spheres because they were considered empty, vulgar, irrelevant, and not worthy of broader public attention.

The author: Gerardo Cham holds a PhD in Discourse Analysis from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has been founding co-director of the Centro María Sibylla Merian de Estudios Latinoamericanos Avanzados (CALAS). He works as a full professor at the University of Guadalajara. His research work focuses on issues of racism, violence, discrimination and power in narratives of and about people of African descent, especially in Latin America. He is a member of SNI, level II. As a writer, he has published six novels.

2. Bruno López Petzoldt: Recordar para perdurar. La participación del cine en la reparación de experiencias traumáticas. CALAS/Editorial Universidad de Guadalajara, noviembre 2022.

Presenter: Yolanda Minerva Campos

Abstract: Film constitutes a powerful cultural tool that operates in multiple ways in the rescue of memories, as well as in the collective reparation and interdisciplinary conceptualization of traumatic experiences in communities devastated by systematic violations of their fundamental rights. It examines and makes perceptible the extensions of silenced or legitimized political violence both in the individual and in the social fabric upset by disturbing marks that thwart existence and coexistence. Cinematographic works do not only refer to the yesterday but, above all, question the conventional patterns used to articulate past, present and future in order to explore possible horizons. As detonators of memory and generators of consciousness, they strengthen different modi memorandi that deal with the still highly active violent past.

the autor: Bruno López Petzoldt holds a PhD in philology and film studies from the University of Hamburg in Germany. His fields of work include theories of film and literature, memory studies and intermediality. He was a lecturer and researcher at the Institute of Romance Philologies and the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Hamburg. He was also a visiting professor at the Hamburg Film and Media Academy and a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholar in Argentina and Brazil. He is currently a research professor at the Latin American Institute of Art, Culture and History of the Federal University of Latin American Integration in Brazil.

The presentations will take place on November 29, from 7:30 to 8:20 p.m. in Hall F of the international area of the FIL. Access is free.

Book presentation: La horizontalidad en las instituciones de la producción de conocimiento

Book presentation: La horizontalidad en las instituciones de la producción de conocimiento

Every knowledge producer linked to an institution has experienced the imperatives that, through rules and hierarchies, channel the production of knowledge and limit the results generated there. Common practices of the institutions involved in the production of knowledge are: the imposition of methods, theories that do not explain local contexts, or the exclusion of voices considered illegitimate for the production of knowledge. Any researcher attached to an institution must deal with a superlative valuation of certain means of scientific dissemination and with little interest in disseminating contributions that escape the main stream. As if that were not enough, bureaucracy is a permanent obstacle to scientific work.

The authors of “La horizontalidad en las instituciones: ¿Perspectiva o paradoja?” (Engl.: “Horizontality in institutions: Perspective or paradox?”) explore and elaborate critical visions from their respective research experiences. It is a reflection on knowledge and institutions that covers very diverse areas: science and technology, international cooperation, education and culture, as well as the production of knowledge in health and judicial institutions.

In the face of organizations that rationalize and limit the emergence of original and novel thinking to confront the innumerable problems and global crises, this book reflects on how to create institutional conditions that favor the processes of scientific autonomy. Is the horizontality of knowledge in institutions a realistic project or rather two antithetical and irreconcilable scenarios? Is it a perspective or a paradox?

Within the framework of the FIL XXXVI, this new book, product of the cooperation of members of the network of researchers of horizontal production of knowledge, will be launched on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022, at 18.00 in Hall C of the international area at Expo Guadalajara. The presenters will be Marx Arriaga Navarro (Director of Educational Materials of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP)) and José Manúel Valenzuela Arce (distinguished researcher of the Colegio de la Frontera Norte (Colef).
