Non-colonial theoretical-methodological approaches in sociocultural health research

The Covid-19 pandemic brought to light multiple realities in the health/disease/care/prevention processes. Most of the health systems in diverse countries of the world were overwhelmed in the search to provide care to the large number of people infected by SARS-COV-2. Processes of historical and structural economic inequality that had a direct impact on health care were aggravated by the pandemic. Hospital reconversion forced health systems to focus solely on COVID-19 care, suspending care for acute and chronic pre-existing diseases, generating greater vulnerability and interrupting processes of adherence to treatment for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, HIV, cardiovascular diseases, mental illnesses, etc.

It is necessary to analyze and reflect on non-colonial theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of health and consider different voices of diverse actors involved in the research process. It is also necessary to consider the statements of the users of health services and of the people involved in health care. It is also essential to show that there are multiple visions besides the one imposed by biomedicine to deal with the processes of health/illness/care-prevention. We jointly seek to establish knowledge constructions hand in hand with all the actors involved in the problems we investigate.

The doctor-patient relationship should be horizontal and listening based, taking into account the biopsychosocial dimensions of the health/illness/care-prevention process to generate better diagnoses, treatment options that comply with adherence and effective prevention strategies. Without the imposition of an exclusively biomedical vision; what do users of medical services know about their illnesses, what do they do to cure them and what individual and collective dimensions are involved in these processes.

This seminar aims to establish processes of dialogue and reflection on the processes of health/illness/care-prevention of various health problems, from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, considering categories such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, etc.

The seminar will be held from November 7th to 9th, 2022 at the University of Guadalajara. Due to space capacity, attendee capacity is limited.
