Renascer OMAC is a Mozambican organization that supports children at risk and users of the Hulene landfill. The neighborhood of Hulene B, Renascer OMAC's area of operation, is a neighborhood suffering the consequences of climate change, floods and uncontrolled fires, combined with the use of environmentally unfriendly practices. Not recycling materials led Renascer to implement environmental education activities for children, adolescents and young people. Activities range from tree planting to charcoal production, which is a clean, environmentally friendly way of using energy for cooking and encourages not cutting down trees.

How does the project contribute to more supportive, socially and ecologically just lifestyles and economies?

Paper charcoal is a form of energy that has no production costs because it uses recycled paper from the hulene B landfill and other sources where paper is abundant. Conventional charcoal was expensive for the majority of the population, most of whom were disadvantaged and could not afford it. By introducing charcoal to the communities, we contribute to increasing their monthly income by enabling them to prepare their meals with recycled paper and, at the same time, contribute to the well-being of the environment. Charcoal is in itself economically fair, as it does not entail any production costs and allows for a fairer and more supportive economy.
