Title: The Anthropocene as a filmic space in Latin American cinema
Abstract: The relationship between cinema and the Anthropocene has become the focus of film studies research in recent years. However, it is a topic which is still under-researched in aesthetic and historical terms in Latin American film historiography. Starting from the selected documentation and filmography, the project seeks to understand the historical and aesthetic representation of the Anthropocene in the documentary field and in Latin American short and feature films since the second half of the twentieth century. This project aims to account for these productions both in their context of production and their distribution/exhibition. Anthropocene in cinema does not only mean to reason with the filmic text of a film, but also to understand cinema as a place of production in relation to the environment. Urban and rural regions do not only tell stories in specific settings, but are also locations in which the realization of a film production consumes enormous natural resources and transforms the place. In this sense, the project wants to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Anthropocene by adding the aspect of visual history. A film series presenting a selection of films dealing with the Anthropocene is part of the project's work.
