Winner of the "Contest for the realization of a medium-length documentary film on the Anthropocene in Latin America".

In February 2022 the CALAS Knowledge Lab: "The Anthropocene as a Multiple Crisis: Latin American Perspectives" announced the winner of the call "Competition for the making of a medium-length documentary film on the Anthropocene in Latin America": Miguel Angel Sanchez from Mexico with his proposal "Anthropos".

Miguel Ángel Sánchez is director and producer of several documentaries since 2012, which had a wide repercussion in international film festivals in Latin America and Europe. He was selected in Berlinale Talents 2022 as director and producer and also teaches at the School of Performing Arts at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico.

The objective of the competition was to make a medium-length documentary film, showing how the world is changing due to the influence of human beings, with a Latin American regional focus on the Anthropocene. The winning team will receive a grant of USD 20,000.00 for the production of the documentary until July 2023.

The proposal of "Anthropos" stands out for its consistency between theme, treatment and audiovisual proposal in the aesthetic approach. "Anthropos" shows the relationship between human beings and the earth, focusing on different levels of transformation, from the countryside of the State of Mexico to its highest acceleration: the mega-Mexico City. Along the way, it shows the consequences of the industry: the contaminated Lerma River and the Mexico-Toluca train, showing one of the key factors: the mobility of people, which creates an irregular growth of the city, driven by economic inequalities.

The documentary focuses on different levels of relationship between human being and land with aesthetic aspects related to a concept of music to create an audiovisual proposal that supports the transmission of the message: That each viewer can reflect their own ideas and associations based on their audiovisual impression, not guided by an explanatory voice.

In the context of the CALAS knowledge laboratory, "Anthropos" contributes with its approach to individual reflection as a space for the projection of the ideas and theories that each one brings from the Anthropocene. Therefore, it generates a space for debate to deepen the understanding of what the Anthropocene represents.
