Editorial Assistant for the CALAS – Line of Research ‘Coping with Environmental Crises’

 The Center for InterAmerican Studies (CIAS) at Bielefeld University is seeking a research associate to work in their offices within the structure of the joint-research initiative "Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences: Coping with Crises" (CALAS) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), starting May 1, 2022. The international and interdisciplinary joint initiative is responsible for a Center for Advanced Studies, where researchers investigate the question of how different social actors in Latin America perceive and evaluate crises, which crisis management solutions do they develop, and how do they implement them in a sustainable manner. The third line of research is particularly dedicated to the question of how environmental crises are dealt with. Further information can be found here.

Your Tasks

The task includes the publication of work within the Center for Latin American Studies (CALAS) at the Bielefeld campus, in particular the knowledge laboratory ‘Coping with Environmental Crises’, in which, among other things, a 6-volume handbook on the Anthropocene is being compiled. In summary:
 

  • editorial work, native proofreading of text, and translation from English to Spanish (70 %)
  • organizational and technical support for the editorial offices (30 %)

The employment is designed to encourage further academic qualification.

Your Profile

We expect

  • completed academic degree in the social sciences or humanities, ideally with a regional focus in Latin America (Masters, State Exam, M.A., M.S.)
  • very strong knowledge of spoken and written English and Spanish
  • good knowledge of spoken and written German
  • experience in translation of academic texts from English to Spanish
  • experience in lecturing academic texts
  • strong organizational and coordination abilities
  • good social and intercultural competence, especially communication skills
  • independent, team oriented, cooperative work ethic

Preferred experience and skills

  • doctorate in the social sciences or humanities, ideally with a focus in environmental history or the political ecology of Latin America
  • experience in the coordination of academic publication projects or in editorial work
  • experience with academic management
