Claudia Pedone is an independent researcher at CONICET at the Gender Studies Research Institute (IIEGE), University of Buenos Aires. PhD in Human Geography from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Between 2005 and 2013 she was Director of the Migration Department at the Institute for Children and the Urban World, Barcelona. Between 2014 and 2015 she was Prometeo Researcher, SENESCYT, Government of Ecuador, at the Institute of Higher National Studies (IAEN), Quito and External Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vice-Ministery of Human Mobility, Government of Ecuador, on family issues, migrant children and youth. She was co-coordinator of the CLACSO South-South Migration GT between 2016 and 2021. She teaches graduate courses on migration studies in Spain, Italy, Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil. Currently she co-coordinates the Gender and Migration Area of the IIEGE, University of Buenos Aires, and since 2016 is a Founding Member of the Network of Qualified Mobility and Migrations in Latin America (RMMCAL) and Member of the CLACSO WG Migrations South-South and Borders. It investigates Latin American international migration from a transnational and intersectional perspective on the issues of migration chains and networks, gender and generational relations, transnational families, the impact of migration policies on the strategies of migrant families, familiarization in migration corridors, and skilled migration in South America.

Research project as CALAS fellow

Title: Ecuador as a destination, transit and waiting place: The "familiarization" of migrations from a transnational and intersectional perspective

 

Summary: The reconfiguration of migratory flows in Latin America is giving rise to complex mobility dynamics in border areas and the articulation of new migratory corridors. Thus, changes in transit trajectories, returns and temporary/definitive settlements are detected in the Western migratory corridor in South America. Since the outbreak of the pandemic by COVID-19, mobility is further affected by the incidence of political practices and the application of migratory regimes that have direct consequences on the bodies and daily lives of migrants, generating regular and irregular flows, transboundary migratory flows and transnationalism processes.

 

Also, the measures restricting mobility created physical and symbolic borders that reinforced old inequalities, especially those crossed by national, gender, racial and sexuality regimes. The closure of national and international borders, together with the tightening of migration policies and control mechanisms, did not stop mobility but made it more difficult to deepen the vulnerability of migrant populations, especially among women, young people, children/children and sexual dissidence. The main objective of this project is to address the trajectories and strategies of the migrant population and the process of "familiarization" of mobility in the Western Corridor of South America, and Ecuador is one of the destinations. From the theoretical-methodological frameworks of transnationalism and intersectionality, I focus on the analysis of three main aspects:

a) revising the definition of transnational families at border crossings in South America, with particular attention to new forms of family care organization and transnational social protection;

b) to study the territory from transnationalism, from the configuration of new territorialities in the Western Corridor and in Ecuador as a place of arrival; and

c) analyze the management of migration policy and control regimes from the Ecuadorian State and the influence of international organizations in the so-called "migration crisis".

With emphasis on the recent arrival of intraregional and extra-continental migratory flows to Ecuador, the research will be carried out based on a multi-located ethnographic field work, for this purpose we will focus on three areas of study: a) the City of Quito, b) the Tulcán-Ipiales border crossing to the north and c) the Huaquillas-Tumbes border crossing in the south.
